Upcycled Kindy Art

Just a little bit of fun here.

I have been clearing and cleaning out my house for what seems like months now.  It’s a bit of a process and I have discussed this at great length to many a friend (Tash, I know you are hearing me on this one!) about how you have to do things in little segments, and how you need to clear one area to make room for tidying another.

Yaaaaawn, such a boring process but once it’s done with a little creativity you might actually start to enjoy it!

I have always been a nostalgic girl, and as of late it’s started to catch up to me with boxes and boxes full of photo’s, letters, postcards, and souvenirs and tickets from our many travels.  There are boxes of the girls artwork from school and it has dawned on me recently that it seems a waste to have it all sitting in the boxes collecting dust when I could have it on display.  But seriously?  To go through Olivia’s 10 years of photo’s, school certificates, and artwork seems a bit daunting at the moment so I thought I would start with Ruby’s kindy art which I had a little idea for some time now.

I literally had bags and bags full of Ruby’s paintings.  Man, that girl likes to splash a bit of paint here and there!  Always vibrant and full of expression are these Jackson Pollock style paintings that I felt it would be good to get the full effect in a collage style canvas.

So I bought a blank canvas ($15 at Ike’s Emporium in Brown’s Bay. Best prices I have seen so far in Auckland) and Liv and I set out cutting squares and rectangle shapes out of these amazing little blasts of color.

I really didn’t think it would take that long but you can only imagine the amount of paintings that Rubes has done in her time when she was at kindy, coupled with the fact that I wanted to mix the colors up and cover the entire canvas made for a full evening’s activity!

Awwww,  love that little handprint….

So, after cutting, and arranging, and pasting…..we came up with Ruby’s Technicolor Canvas Work of Art! Recycled Artwork which we can now proudly hang on our wall.  Finished it off with a coat of lacquer spray which gave it a nice bit of shine (just subtle).

LOVE IT!

I’m sure this is probably something most have seen before but just a little reminder that you can take the things you love and make them into something you love even more and can appreciate every day (previously the paintings were shoved in bags under our stairs, now the canvas collage is hanging in our upstairs hallway!).

Now that is flipping cool!!! I love the whole idea of not letting the art of our little ones stay in tubs up in the attic when they can be admired on our walls….I think I feel a summer project coming on!

  2. What an awesome idea! As all my kids have left home now :( and :) in equal measure and I still have boxes of artwork I may just do this. Of course now I also get grandkids artwork too.. would be cool to do a two generation artwork son and granddaughter!! Thanks for the inspiration

Too funny , the timing is this post is perfect. I just cleaned out some stuff in the basement…round 126 I am sure….I had thought about doing something with the kids art which is in bankers boxes. I am definitely going to get started on something like this soon. Great idea!

Thanks guys!! We had fun doing it, although I don’t recommend doing something like this late at night as my eyes were starting to cross with all the bright colors!! There are so many neat things you can do with kids artwork. The sky really is the limit and it’s just getting the time to do it. I have had this idea for so long now (probably 2 years!) and just getting to it now but in the end I had a lot more “material” to work with so it made for a better canvas I reckon!! Would love to see your canvasses when they are finished! Send them to me and I’ll load them up on the blog!! Caitlin, I LOVE your idea of doing a generation thing, how cool would that be?? Awesome!

Aww love that! Our kids don’t paint at school nearly as much!!

I love what you have created with all Ruby’s art work. She certainly loved painting at kindy. You are an amazing Mum, Stephanie.
